“The Press” In 1866
July 21 From a private letter received by last mail, says the Nelson “Evening Mail , of the 4th instant, we learn that H.R.H. Prince Alfred intends visiting Australia and New Zealand. This will be the first time that any member of the Royal Family has been in the antipodes, ana the result of the Prince’s trip, should it take place, will be the effecting of some important changes in the localities which he may visit MAUNGATAPU MURDERS. The Maungatapu murderers were brought up for examination to-day; the circumstantial evidence was very strong. The independent testimony of Sullivan is not yet given. On a former occasion Jervey swore that the prisoners had bought
articles at his store in Canvastown, which he wrapped up in a portion of the “Marlborough Press”, dated he believed May 30. The evidence to-day went to show that the charge of the loaded gun was rammed down with a piece of the paper named, and that another part of the same paper was found containing some pepper taken by the prisoners from Canvastown; and another piece was found on the body of Matthieu. All these pieces fit together, and show that they are parts of the same paper. The prisoner Sullivan has been identified by a clerk in the New Zealand Bank as having sold gold to him on the 14th of June. The prisoners were remanded until Thursday, the 26th inst. (Nelson, by inter-provincial telegraph.)
