Ways Of Providing More Hotel Staff

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Government should take the lead in working out the ways and means of providing for the large increase in the number of hotel workers needed to staff the various new hotels now under construction, said Mr K. B. Myers a director of New Zealand Breweries at the company’s annual meeting today.

“We still find it difficult to recruit satisfactory staff in New Zealand and this is a most important element in the conduct of our hotels,” he said. As a result of the Government’s interest in the develop-

ment of tourism, the Education Department was now working in conjunction with the Hotel Association and the Hotel Workers’ Union in conducting a training course for chefs at the Auckland Polytechnic, he said. Hotel Managers

In addition the Government had recently agreed to share with the Hotel Association the sponsorship of overseas training for hotel managers. The proposal was to send six hotel managers at a time on an overseas course extending over eight months. “This should lead, if carried on for a few years, to an improvement in the managerial standard in our major hotels,” said Mr Myers. Speaking of the “working holidays” scheme whereby the Hotel Association brought young Australian women to work in New Zealand hotels, Mr Myers said: “We could not, over the last three years, have carried on without this •scheme.”
