Hindemith Quartet

One of Paul Hindemith's most significant compositions, his Third String Quartet, will be played by the Prague Quartet of the University of Canterbury today. Hindemith, who died only a few years ago, was an acknowledged master of this medium; in fact, he possessed an intimate understanding of all instrumental writing, based on his own gifts as a performer on the viola. He was a member of the Amar String Quartet. He gave the first performance of Walton’s

Viola Concerto and he became a widely sought-after conductor. This composition, a movement of which was.played by the Prague Quartet a few weeks ago, is typical of the strong athletic writing of Hindemith. Its clear logic, its perfect layout and the cumulative sense of excitement generated is sure to make a strong impression. Also to be heard is one of the charming lesser-known quartets of Haydn. The recital will be given at 1.10 p.m. in the University Hall.
