£7m Cost Of Ships’ Waiting Time
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Export and Shipping Council said today that efforts to streamline further the turn-round of ships on the New Zealand coast must be intensified.
After the council’s meeting this afternoon the chairman (Sir John Ormond) said: “Without limiting our field of endeavour we must do all we can to reduce the turnround of ships on the New Zealand coast and at the same time emphasise that similar improvements should be made in Britain. “This is the basic and most fruitful way to reduce shipping costs.” In 1965 ships of the Conference Lines spent 5750 days on the New Zealand coast. | representing a cost of £l2OO la day or about £7 million. I Since the council bad been in existence, the average |number of days on the coast lhad been cut down from 58 Ito 50 for ships loading and j discharging and from 34 to 130 for those loading only. | “We must endeavour to i improve these figures,” said Sir John Ormond.
; Two-port loading was an i important factor in streamlining, he said. A figure of 30 per cent 1 was achieved last year and 1 it was hoped this could be . increased in 10 per cent rises r to the 60 per cent recom- > mended by the streamlining t committee. 1 It was also Important that as little time as possible be I lost internally. Shipping was , not always to blame for slow ' turn-round, he said.
