N.Z. SPEECH STANDARD

Local Flavour Desirable Whether New Zealand should have its own standard of good speech or seek to follow rigidly the English standard was one of the questions discussed at the July meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Speech and Drama. Members agreed that the highest standards should be aimed for, but that while speech faults such as nasality, mumbling, and distorted sounds must be eliminated, typical New Zealand speech rhythms and idioms give character to our speech. Many teachers were now being asked to help adult pupils who were interested in general speech improvement for commercial, professional and social purposes, rather than in the study of poetry and drama. Teaching suggestions were put forward for the development of dear vital speech and of confidence in verbal expression for everyday purposes. Other matters discussed included the technique of speaking into a microphone and the problems of producing a smooth flow of rhythm to certain madam varan.
