River Rises Feared With More Rain

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 19. The Hawke’s Bay Catchment Board said today that another six inches of rain could cause river levels to rise appreciably.

Should the Ngaruroro river’s overflow channel in the Pakowhai district begin functioning, the recently-made pilot cut will be opened to facilitate the flow of excessive river water to the sea a mile and a half north of Clive. In Manawatu there are no reports of flooding or closed roads, but the Manawatu Catchment Board has been warned to expect heavy rain. Weather is unpleasant in the Wellington district, and winds gusted up to 84 m.p.h. but there were no reports of serious damage. The Paekakariki Hill road is still closed and a slip partially blocked the Ohariu Valley road. Conditions are cold in Horowhenua, Nelson and Blenheim.

Winds and turbulence allowed Wellington airport to open only intermittently today.
