Stablemates Fit For Washdyke Double
Jester Jinks and Even Chance, form runners for P. H. Jones’s stable in the double at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting, impressed further with good gallops at Riccarton yesterday.
Jester Jinks led throughout in a five-furlong barrier trial on the outside of the course proper. Kaliniera drew level with him close to the post, and the Washdyke rivals, with light boys up, finished clear of Natter (N. Cowles). Natter Is a light-weight and should be an improver in the first Claremont Handicap at Washdyke.
Mogambo (M. McCann) won the first barrier trial easily, but did not have open-class horses running against him. Another winner, and in a stronger field, was Tumble, which ran keenly in the hands of D. N. Hadfield and finished clear of his stablemate, Misjudge (G. Gullery). Tumble’s fresh run is probably his best, and he has had plenty of time to freshen .for sprint tests at the Riccarton carnival. He was an impressive winner for Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford in his first of two starts at the Dunedin winter meeting. The rest of the galloping was done on the No. 7 grass. The weather was showery and the track soft. In Difficulties The stablemates, Gunga Din (P. Williams) led El Beka (P. King) by two lengths ending six furlongs in Imin 19sec, the final three furlongs in 394/ssec. El Beka dropped behind when his saddle slipped. Even Chance (M. King) worked away from the mile, quickened to the half-mile, and sprinted the final three furlongs in 39-l/ssec. R. J. Skelton will ride Even Chance and Jester Jinks at Washdyke, so this combination is assured of heavy backing. Takatua (B. Collins) took Imin 24-4/ssec for six furlongs, but quickened for the last three furlongs in 41-2/5 sec. Takatua was eased after autumn racing, but will make another start in the Levels Handicap at Washdyke. Brown Brocade (A. Reuben) and Mushtara (D. N. Hadfield) ran keenly on terms finishing six furlongs in Imin 21-4/ssec, the final three in 42-2/ssec. Fit Mare Brown Brocade could make an impression in one of the sprint races at the Grand National meeting. Apache (A. Swanson) recorded Imin 23-3/ssec for six furlongs after running the opening three in 41-l/ssec. He has been disappointing so far on his present campaign.
Seminole (B. Edens) led her stablemate, Pawnee (C. Kerkvliet) by a length after half a mile, the final three furlongs in 40-2/ssec. Royal Student (C. T. Wilson) was keen to quicken while running three furlongs in 42sec. The stablemates, May Wyne (F. H. Skelton) and Gold Shower (M. King) started at the five furlongs and sprinted the last three in 40-3/ssec. Another Start The promising apprentice, A. Telfer, who has been away from racing since the autumn with a broken leg, hopes to resume race riding either at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting or the Grand National meeting. The 17-year-old Telfer rode 16 winners in a short but highly promising career before his accident on a farm at Mosgiel. He expects to ride at 7-7 when he resumes.
