Greenstone Said To Be Stolen
(New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, July 19. Three Hokitika men were this morning charged with the theft of greenstone valued at eii.49>n.
They appeared in the Hokitika Magistrate's Court where their counsel’s request for an interim suppression of name was granted by Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M. The greenstone is alleged to have been taken from wild, almost inaccessible country, the property of the Crown, between June 1, 1964. and March 4, 1965. This morning’s court appearance was brief with a remand granted by consent to August 17. Appearing for the police, Detective-Sergeant J. I*. Crozier, head of the Greymouth C. 1.8., said the alleged offence involved 25 tons, 15cwt of nephrite and bowenite—which come under the general layman’s heading of greenstone. The police said it had been taken from an unnamed tributary of Olderog creek, which is a tributary of the Arahura river. Its value was 5s per lb and
was the property of the Crown. The three men were granted bail on their own surety of £lOO each.
