MAROONED On Honeymoon
A utility vehicle driven by a honeymoon couple was towed from a rushing river by a marooned school bus during the floods at Waiwera yesterday, according to a Press Association message from Auckland.
Mr and Mrs A. M. Duncan, of Taumarunui, drove their vehicle into what they imagined was about Ift of water covering the WaiweraHelensville highway at Upper Waiwera early in the afternoon. The water was sft deep. The utility vehicle was stuck, they were drenched, and all their belongings were soaked.
Fighting the strong current, Mr and Mrs Duncan were able to reach nearby houses, but the vehicle was on the point of being swept away by the torrent until a resident, Mr G. Atkins, went out with a rope around his waist and tied the vehicle to a fence. It was not until 5.30 nearly five hours after it entered the water—that it was towed out by the driver of a school bus, Mr J. Urlic. Mr Urlic was a flood victim at 8.15 a.m. when his bus, after fording one stretch of road, was unable to go forward or back.
