STUCK IN MUD
Small Boy Rescued A four-year-old boy, stuck in mud up to his armpits off Lake Terrace road yesterday afternoon, was rescued by a poultry farmer. The boy, Pau! Brailey, son of Mr and Mrs J. E. Brailey, of 61 Vardon terrace, was playing with other boys on a cleared area of land which is I being filled by bulldozers. The boys were on a heap of soil. Paul ran off it to go home but got stuck in black, oily mud. The more he struggled the deeper he went in. The other boys became alarmed. Mr C. G. Church, of 258 Lake Terrace road, heard cries and shouts from his poultry farm. After laying pieces of wood on the mud he dug the terrified boy out. Mr and Mrs Brailey had been told by the other children of Paul’s predicament but the boy had been rescued when Mr Brailey arrived.
Astronomical Society.—The history of man’s observation of the universe was outlined by Mr N. E. Heath at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Astronomical Society last evening. Mr Heath discussed the early ideas men had on the relation of earth to terrestial bodies, the observations that were later made and the thoughts men had, and the current theories on the origins of the *iverse.
