Purchase Approved

The purchase in Auckland of a new mayoral car costing £3885 was confirmed by the City Council last evening. The council had £4OOO on the estimates for a replacement car; and the new car was bought by a group of four councillors who visited Auckland. Cr. R. H. Stillwell said he was not objecting to the car, but it was unusual to purchase anything without getting approval of the council first

“What is he objecting to? Does he want the Mayor to ride a bike?” Cr. W. P. Glue asked.

The present mayoral car had done 82,000 miles and was past its usefulness, Cr. H. E. Denton said. The car bought was ideal and had been bought without overseas funds. “We have no apologies to make,” he added.

The Auckland City Council had had the car under offer, but had dithered, “and we got in first,” Cr. N. G. Pickering said. “I stand 100 per cent behind Cr. Glue in the purchase, and I regret that the matter has been raised as it has.” He thought it would have been fair to call tenders locally to test the market, said Cr. A. R. Guthrey.
