Police Chief Dies

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LOS ANGELES, July 17. The Los Angeles police chief, Mr William H. Parker, collapsed and died at a testimonial dinner in his honour last night He was 64. Mr Parker was thrust into a controversial position last summer for his handling of the Watts District Negro riots in August. Civil rights leaders said that police used brutal tactics on Negroes before and during the riots, and demanded that Mr Parker resign. Mr Parker answered his critics by saying: “If I am eliminated, this will be the greatest victory that the antipolice elements in America will have attained in contemporary times.” Mr Parker received a plaque at the dinner, citing him as ones of the outstanding police chiefs in the United States.
