Hospitals Told To Cut Costs

AUCKLAND, July 18. Hospital boards throughout the country have been told to take “prompt and positive steps” to reduce their expenditure for the 1966-67 year by more than 2 per cent.
The Health Department has told boards in a circular letter that the total vote for the year ending March 31, 1967, will be £44.35 million—about 2.2 per cent less than estimates submitted by the boards. The letter says that the reduction is necessary to keep total Government expenditure within reasonable limits and should be viewed against the background of New Zealand’s present economic position.
The Auckland Hospital Board, which received the letter at its meeting tonight, was told that the increase in the board’s cash require-
ments for the year was £1,161,642, or 13.2 per cent, over last year. A reduction of 2 per cent would be about £200,000.
