Servicemen And Votes

Sir, —I agree with Mr Kirk about votes for men (or boys) aged 20, but only if they are servicemen. If they are strongminded, they will show themselves willing to work for it and their country. Never before were times so good for them. Years ago my mother hated uniform of any kind, but when 1914 brought a war I (a nurse), my husband, brother-in-law, and four brothers gave between us 31 years’ service in England, France, Egypt, and Anzac. One brother was flying in France when 18 years old. In June, 1938, he went to England on a visit to our parents, and owing to the Second World War joined a New Zealand regiment and went to Egypt. I voted Labour at the following election for a woman who became a member of Parliament, but her two sons when called up declared they were pacifists. That finished me for Labour.— Yours, etc., ST. MARTINS. July 16, 1966.
