Opening By Minister (N.Z. Press Association 1 PALMERSTON N„ July 18. Manawatu’s “Little Holland” —5OO acres of land in the Moutoa basin which lies below high tide level —today entered a new era. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) opened a new flood pump, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, which, when the drain to the sea is closed at high tide, will pump rainwater from 12,000 acres in the Moutoa Drainage Board’s area at 3,500.000 gallons an hour. Previously this water ran into a main drain which meets the sea in the Foxton tidal estuary. The closing of the sea gates twice daily at high tide regularly caused floodwaters to bank up over thousands of acres.
