Record For Coins
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 17. A complete set of New Zealand coins fetched a record £475 on the second and final day of an antique auction. The set included a 1935 Waitangi crown. The record for a Waitangi crown is £360. The remainder of the set, usually sold as separate items, normally brings £6O to £7O. The auctioneers said it was unusual for a complete set to fetch such a price.
Less than 5 per cent of the catalogue of more than 1000 items was passed in. The sale realised more than £14,000. Buyers came from ax far as Invercargill and North Auckland. A life insurance company bought a brass helmet for £35 and two antique muzzle-loading rifles for £36. Maori artifacts offered included a whalebone patu, sold for £4O, a flax pounder (£l7 10s), and a greenstone tiki (£l5). Two copies of Captain Cook’s books on the South Pacific sold for £l5.
