WAIMATE WIN FOR MOSQUE LIKELY

Two jumpers reverting to flat racing, Lord Fair and Sir Athol, look likely favourites for their respective legs of the T.A.B. double at Waimate today, while an open-class handicapper, Mosque, has a good chance to win his hurdles debut.

Although his most recent flat form has been disappointing, Mosque meets a weak field in the Studholme Hurdles, the second event on the Waimate District Hunt Club’s programme, and should win. Mosque, a younger brother to Eiffel Tower, is trained by W. J. Hillis for Mr W. E. Hazlett and like other novice junipers from this stable should lack nothing in the way of education.

Three starts back Lord Fair won the Tahuna Steeplechase at Wingatui but showed he has lost none of his dash on the flat by running a sound fifth against the open milers at Washdyke two weeks ago. He reverts to hack class in the Redcliffs Handicap and could prove too good for his rivals. Sir Athol has w’on his last

two starts, both over hurdles, and although his most recent flat form has not been good he showed in his trackwork last week that he is quite capable of winning the Morven Handicap, though he could meet strong opposition from Gladaub and Cranbrook. Sir Athol has been scratched from the Studholme Hurdles to concentrate on this event, while with Mosque, also a dual acceptor, the process has been reversed. The Te Waimate Steeple-

chase has been thrown open with the defection of Tidal Rip. Bandarshar or Melotone could prove best in his absence. Although overnight showers were predicted, the track should still be in good order.
