Girl Fell Into Mine
(NZ. Preu Aun.—CowriaM) CALUMET, (Michigan), July 17.
A little girl out berry picking fell into a mile-deep abandoned copper mine on the remote Keeweenaw Peninsula yesterday, and rescue efforts have so far been in vain. Two rescue workers were lowered 300 feet into the dark, dripping hole but said they found no trace of Ruth Ann Miller, aged seven. Rescue workers split the concrete cap covering the long-abandoned mine shaft and twice lowered two men in a huge bucket The bucket hit a big beam and could go no further.
A mining company rushed a bigger crane to the site in an effort to pull out the beam and lower another rescue team into the shaft. Ruth Ann’s brother, who was berry-picking with her, rushed home after seeing his sister drop from sight, as she stepped beside a bush and reached for berries. Their mother called the police.
