Appeal By Thant

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright.) NEW YORK, July 17. U Thant, the United Nations Secretary-Gen-eral. yesterday appealed to North Vietnam not to place on trial as war criminals American pilots who have been taken prisoner. The Secretary-General said in a statement that such a trial would generate intense escalation of the War, which he said threatens to become the Third World War. Yesterday, 18 United States Senators who have opposed escalation of the war called upon the North Vietnamese to refrain from any act of violence against the airmen. They warned that trying the captives as war criminals would bring a public demand for retaliation swift and sure.
