‘Liquor Tax Should Pay’ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 17. A proportion of the huge tax revenues on the liquor trade in New Zealand should be diverted into research into the problems of alcoholism, the National Society on Alcoholism decided at its annual meeting. New Zealand had 25.000 alcoholics. said Dr. C. E. Emery, of Dunedin, who moved the successful remit. Motorists were required to pay for the building upkeep and maintenance of roads, said Dr. Emery, so why should not the users of alcohol and those who profited from the trade, be required also to pay for the ravages caused by it, he asked.
