Tipping

Sir, —Like your correspondent, “Traveller,” I want to add congratulations on the progressive attitude of the South Isfland Publicity Association in bringing out a brochure on tipping. In some parts of the world tourists are plagued for tips which are apparently expected on every occasion, and this surely must have a bad' effect on the tourist industry in these countries. Others more enlightened are taking a firm stand and are discouraging a practice which has nothing to commend it and is degrading both to the giver and the receiver. Fortunately, in New Zealand people are paid reasonably well for what they do, and no-one would favour a system where workers depend on tips for a living. In the past this sometimes was’ the case. On the other hand few would dispute the proper recognition of exceptional service given by offering a tip or some other suitable acknowledgement. Yours, etc., July 15, 1966.
