PAPARUA COUNCIL
By-Election Result Mr D. S. Goulding, a Hornby hairdresser, was elected to a vacancy in the Paparua County Council in a by-elec-tion on Saturday. Provisional results are: Mr Goulding .. 210 Mrs J. E. Woodham 156 Mr M. McConnell .. 129 Mr T. B. Whelan .. 121 The by-election was for a councillor for the Hornby Riding, a seat left vacant by the death of the late Mr R. J. Roberts. Mr G. A. K. Kelly, returning officer for the county, said that the provisional result could not be upset by the special votes yet to be counted. About 650 people of the 4000 eligible to vote did so, a poll of about 15 per cent. Mr Kelly said that this was about two-thirds of the number that had voted in the triennial elections about eight months ago. The poll was a fair one. Mr Goulding has conducted his hairdressing business on the same premises for the last 23 years and is married with an adult family. He has lived in the Hornby district for 27 years and has served on the Hornby County Town Committee for the last four years. He has been a member of the Licensing Trust Committee for three years.
