Life Penalty Lifted
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A marathon application for permission to return to a racecourse succeeded yesterday when the Racing Conference, after 26 years, lifted the life disqualification of a Wellington businessman, Mr B. Nausbaum. Mr Nausbaum has applied many times for an amnesty, but without success. On Thursday he went before the conference executive committee with a solicitor, Mr G. J. Joseph. It was the first time legal representation had been used for such an application. The hearing was not open to the press, but yesterday the committee’s recommendation, that the application be granted, came before the conference’s annual meeting. The president of the conference (Mr G. H. Grigg) said granting the application did not mean that Mr Nausbaum could own racehorses. He said the committee’s view was that the balance of the life disqualification be lifted. The conference approved the committee's recommendation without discussion. Mr Nausbaum was disqualified for life for corrupt practice, the offering of money to the rider of another horse in a race in which his own horse. Nigger Boy, was engaged. The race was the Members’ Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting on November 16, 1940. It was won by Nigger Boy.
