Kitchen In The Bedroom

(By

STELLA BRUCE)

The morning is chilly, the alarm-clock sings its brutal song. You stretch out an arm from the warmth of the bed, tweak a couple of switches......and breakfast is well on the way to being served.

I expect such facilities to be available in Heaven, but I had not expected them on earth for a time. But here they are, not on general sale, but as large as life in manufacturers’ test laboratories. Until now, the idea of a bedside “breakfast bar” has been tempting but impractible. Now a range of miniature equipment, plus a highly efficient ventilation system, makes bedroom cooking both feasible and pleasant. Ingredients for the breakfast are kept in a small refrigerator and crockery and

cutlery in the cupboard next to the bed.

The infra-red cooking device on the working surface can cook anything from a slice of toast to a chop (assuming you can stomach such a thing at eight in the morning) by the simple changing of a few filaments.

Or if you prefer, there is a tiny electronic oven. Place your raw breakfast ingredients—bacon and egg, on a plate—in the refrigerator the night before. When you wake, simply transfer the plate to the oven. A minute later, you can start eating.
