N.Z., Aust. Unite To Hold League Cup
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE. Australia yesterday decided to offer to stage the Rugby League World Cup in 1968 in conjunction with New Zealand.
The Australian League will inform the International Board, which meets in Sydney on July 22, of its decision. The cup has not been played for since 1960 in England, when Britain won and only a small profit was shown. The big gate money for international Rugby League is now in Australia and England and France have been keen to have the cup series staged in the Southern Hemisphere.
Under the roster of world tours, France would have visited Australia in 1968, but has said it can no longer undertake long tours. The League also decided to ask the International Board to adopt the five-yard ruck rule instead of the three yards at present operating for international matches.
Australia will oppose English moves to alter the rules on deliberate penalties. It believes there is sufficient scope under the existing rule to give the non-offending side an advantage. A system of clearances and permits for players going overseas also will be recommended to the International Board.
