BY-ELECTION SENSATION
Win For Welsh Nationalists t S'.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright/ CARDIFF, July 15. The Welsh Nationalist Party today won its first seat in the House of Commons in a by-election victory in Carmarthen over the Labour Party candidate. Mr Gwynfor Evans, a market gardener, aged 54, won| the constituency, polling; 16.179 votes, as against the Labour Party candidate’s I 13.743. Labour had a 9233 majorityl at the general election in March. The by-election was caused hy the death of Lady Megan; Lloyd George. Mr Evans’s victory was one of the most sensational Parliamentary election results in Welsh history—and set off unprecedented scenes of cheering, hymn-singing and I celebrations among Welsh 1 Nationalists. The Welsh Nationalists are campaigning for home rule' for Wales, instead of govern-j ment by Parliament in London.
