Labour-Only Inquiry Former Judge To Preside
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 15
Sir Arthur Tyndall, a former Judge of the Arbitration Court, has agreed to be chairman of a committee to examine labour-only contracting.
The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said in a telegram to the president of the Federation of Labour (Mr T. E. Skinner) that if the committee was able to make any acceptable recommendations on labour-only contracting generally it would consider whether some arrangement might be reached between the Government and the F.O.L. for Government contracts. This term of reference would mean the end of labour-only contracting on Ministry of Works projects, Mr Skinner said.
The parties on the committee will be the F.0.L., with the secretary of the Carpen-
ters’ Union (Mr W. F. Molineaux), Mr A. Mason, general manager of P.T.Y. Homes, Ltd., the employer principally concerned in the dispute at Marsden Point, the Labour Department and the Ministry of Works. The Minister said he felt that if the Builders’ Federation, whose position was somewhat neutral, was brought into the discussions it would be likely to facilitate a solution. Mr Skinner has agreed. Mr Skinner said the F.O.L. and the Carpenters’ Union would recommend to a meeting of carpenters at Marsden Point on Monday morning that they return to work.
