RETURN WILL BE WELCOMED
( CRICKETERS everywhere '■'* will welcome the announcement that the Timaru and New Zealand wicketkeeper, J. T. Ward, will be available for Canterbury
again next season. Ward could not play last summer because of business commitments. Although Ward's career, which began in 1957, has been handicapped by injury, he stands fourth among all New Zealand wicket-keepers. E. C. Petrie heads the list with 216 dismissals, F. L. H.
Mooney made 213, K. C. James 198 and Ward so far has 171. A better assessment of Ward's capabilities may be won from a comparison of these wicket-keepers’ rates of dismissal. Ward easily heads the list, his 171 victims from 67 matches giving him an average of 2.55. Below him come Colquhoun (2.39), Mooney (2.37), A. E. Dick (2.06), G. H. Mills (2.03), and Petrie (2.0). Ward is a stylish, sometimes artistic wicket-keep-er, a splendid team man, and often a very useful batsman. At 29, he should have many more stumpings and catches to come.
