Head-On Collision; Man Killed

A man was killed instantly when his car was involved in a head-on collision with another car at the Ryal Bush corner on the Invercargill-Queenstown highway at 9.30 a.m. yesterday, the Press Association reports.

He was Duncan Sellars, aged 71, a retired farmer, of Meldrum street, Winton.

The driver of the other car, David Lancelot Wilson, a topdressing pilot, of Grass mere, Invercargill, is in Kew Hospital in a “fairly satisfactory” condition. Van Hit Pole The police are withholding the name of a young man killed when a van overturned and hit a pole near Egmont Village at 11.5 on Thursday night. His parents live in England. His companion, Wally Arthur Wilson, of Ocean View road. New Plymouth, is in a satisfactory condition in the New Plymouth Hospital. Truck Somersaulted A 43-year-old truck driver, Thomas James Weatherall, of Birkenhead, was admitted to Middlemore Hospital yesterday with a suspected broken back after the four-ton truck he was driving apparently somersaulted over a 20-foot bank in a quarry at Takapuna. The truck landed on its wheels at the bottom of the quarry and the driver was thrown out of the cab. It took six men tv get him out on a stretcher and into the ambulance. 275 Deaths At 4.30 p.m. yesterday 275 traffic deaths this year had been reported to the Transport Department. At this time last year the total was 318. The toll this month is 23, compared with 23 at the same time last July.
