SOFTBALL CUP

Award Made To Papanui The Papanui senior men • softball team that won the ipss--66 championship, was. in addition Io being tne most successful. also the most sporting team. The Canterbury association announced that the Papanui team had won the 21 Cup tor sportsmanship. Awarding of the sportsmanship, conduct and dress trophies was left to the Umpires’ Association and Its recommendations were approved by the Canterbury association. The Dress Cup was won by the West Old Girls senior team and the Conduct Cup was awarded to another women's club, Templeton. Knock-out Remit The association’s executhe will recommend to the annual general meeting that It dispense with the open grade knock-out tournament usually held before the season and after the Christmas recess. The chairman (Mr M. R. Belli said that such a remit would give teams two extra competition matches. It was also suggested that a further round be played at Labour week-end Miss N. Beale said that it would be unwise to dispense with the knock-out tournaments completely. She suggested that the recommendation refer to Saturday tournaments so that tournaments could be played on Sundays if it should be the club’s wish and also to keep faith with the donators of knockout trophies. The main issue was to provide two extra Saturdays, said Mr J. Rochford. Women’s and men s tournaments could be held on different Sundays, a more workable scheme than at present, he safd.

The executive will also recommend that competitions recommence a week later than usual after the Christmas break. To avoid losing a competition round, matches will be played at Labour week-end.

The Christmas break will then extend from December 17 until January 21. Competitions will begin on October 1 and wilt end on March 25.
