TOWTRUCK PIRATES

Restrictions In Queensland (Special Crxpdt. N.Z P..A.) SYDNEY, July 14. The Queensland State Government is expected to restrict tow-truck operators after an official inquiry into the business. The Inquiry was ordered after charges by motorists that some tow-truck drivers hauled cars away from the scenes of accidents without permission, that spare parts had been stolen from wrecked vehicles, and that police had been bribed by towing operators to tell them about accidents. Recent reports said the Government is likely to insist on special licensing for all tow-truck vehicles, and regular mechanical inspections. All tow-truck drivers are also expected to be made to sign statements on the condition of vehicles before they tow them away. This week, Brisbane Insurance companies have issued their clients with lists of approved towing firms in case of accidents. The motorists have been given cards saying: “As owner of the vehicle you have the sole right to choose a towing service. Do not allow yourself to be coerced into utilising the services of any towing operator other than those listed, irrespective of where the suggestion arises.”
