A Mini Cooper S, driven by R. Aaltonen and H. Liddon, won the international Czechoslovakian rally recently, an event which counts towards the European rally championship. A Lotus Cortina was second, and another Cooper S was third. Of 80 starters, only 20 were classified as finishers. The first nonBritish car home was the Saab of E. Carlsson, which finished fifth. Ss * * A 200-mile sports car race at Watkins Glen was won by an American driver, B. Fulp, in a LolaChevrolet sports car. Fulp now leads the United States road racing championship, having previously won a race at the Riverside circuit. * $ * Jackie Stewart, injured in the Belgian G.P., has now left hospital and is convalescing at his home in Scotland. Another BMW finished second, a lap behind the winning Alfa. # # # At the annual meeting of the Jewett Car Club in Wellington recently it was reported membership represented about one-quarter of the Jowett Javelin and Jupiter cars in New Zealand. Mr G. G. Walker was elected president Mr D. A. Penlington vice-presi-dent and Mr A. B. Bennett secretary. The club was formed in 1962 with 30 members, and now has 287 members. Jowett cars went out of production in 1954. # # # Hillman Imps took the first three places in their class in the 43-hour international Gulf rally in Britain recently. » » « Lotus Cortina drivers have won two European hill etimbs in the last few weeks: Sir John Whitmore won the Mont Ventoux event (saloon class) by lsec from an Alfa Romeo GTA, and G. Griel won the saloon class in the Austrian Axamer Lizum climb, also beating by 7sec the best GT class time, which was set by a Jaguar Etype.
