Coping With Peak Traffic
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 13. The Auckland Harbour Bridge would eventually have three lanes used in one direction and one in the other to contain peak-hour flow, the chairman of the Bridge Authority, Sir John Allum, said today. He said there would be a troubled three years before the bridge extensions were ready for use in 1969. “During the last year traffic increased by 13 per cent to 10,603,252 vehicles,” said Sir John Allum. “Eventually, before the extensions are opened, we will be forced to adopt the system of three lanes one way and one the other. But we want to delay this as long as possible because of difficulties which will be caused in the single lane by slow traffic.”
