NEED FOR STUDY

Junior College Concept Although the concept of junior colleges was an exciting one, the full Implications of implementing any such scheme would need to be closely investigated before a definite decision was made about their establishment, the board of governors of Mairehau High School decided yesterday. The board agreed to forward a copy of a statement on the subject prepared by its chairman (Mr C. T. Ford) to the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council. Mr Ford told the board that the plan presented by Shirley Boys’ High School did not show the full implications. He did not favour the setting up of colleges until a close

examination had been made of their potential. "The subject needs a thorough investigation on a national level,” Mr Ford said. 'lt could warrant the setting up of a specially-appointed commission.” The headmaster of Malrehau High School (Mr A. B. Ryan) told the board he would strongly oppose any "tinkering about” with such a scheme. He agreed with Mr Ford that the whole question needed careful consideration. "There is no room for these colleges without a modification of the whole system,” he said. "I am very interested in the idea, but I doubt if it could be implemented without considerable dislocation and difficulty. Some of the points in this report are very favourable, but a good deal more inquiry is needed yet”
