BEYOND-FREE PASS WIN COURSE DOUBLE

(From Our Own Reporter) TRENTHAM. Beyond and Free Pass returned £5O 7s 6d for £1 when they won the on-course double at Trentham yesterday. Beyond, a Red Mars gelding from Wanganui, won the Corunna Hurdles, for which he was fifth favourite.

Free Pass, one of a number of useful wet-track performers sired by the Amberleybased Comte de Grasse, snatched a nose victory over Blue Turtle in the second leg, the Juvenile Handicap. Beyond’s win in the Corunna Hurdles was his third in four starts as a jumper. He ran keenly into the lead near the half-mile and lasted it out gamely by threequarters of a length from Emphatique, a newcomer,

• from Takanini, at the meeting. The others tired badly in • the bad ground, Kurrajong , leading them in 10 lengths ' back. Magog, which got a long way back early in the race, made a stayer’s run for fourth close up and a length in advance of Tit for Tat. Hello KlnfeL the favourite after his win on Saturday, came down at the last fence. He appeared to be hampered by the falling Kaimoi Star, but he was well beaten at the time. SKELTONS AGAIN The Juvenile Handicap was another of those races dominated by horses ridden by the brothers R. J. and W. D. Skelton. It was also characteristic that R. J. Skelton's mount Free Pass was ridden from back in the field and finished at a great rate i to ( snatch victory on the post. Blue Turtle was upsides with the Washdyke-tralned Smart Time and Chino some distance out. He took a short lead going to the furlong, and had it won at every stride but the last. High Wind, a promising halfbrother to the good sprinter Misere, ran it out gamely, a length back third. He was forced over a fair bit of ground in or close to the leading line, and could not quicken enough to get clear in the last furlong. Comte de Liege carried topweight of 8-11 Into fourth place, but he had his chance. Smart Time dropped right out In the straight and finished eighteenth. WIN FOR WASHDYKE Glamis Lad, a lukewarm second favourite, gave the other hacks a sound beating In the Seatoun Handicap. Mr K. G. McLaughlin’s three-year-old Kurdistan gelding gave the South Island it’s second success at the meeting. Trained at Washdyke by G. G. Hampton, and ridden by the Auckland jockey B. F. Andrews, Glamis Lad won running away by two lengths. He led the chase after the tearaway Monograph to the straight, came to the front going easily outside the furlong and won by two lengths from the hot favourite. Mighty Fair, which had his chance. Rahanul also got up to beat Monograph out of third place. Recharge, R. J. Skelton’s mount, findsihed doggedly to beat Diamond Red, the mount of W. D. Skelton, in the Pietone Handicap. This was the second time yesterday, but it has often happened before, that these two members of a talented family have been on the first and second place-getters. Each time yesterday R. J. Skelton was on the winner. Recharge, the third favourite, ran to a handy position behind Diamond Red and State Ruler on the home turn, and ran it out gamely to win by three parts of a length. Diamond Red was ridden into the lead straight away, and he showed the utmost gameness to save second place after being under a hard ride under his 9-8 on straightening up. State Ruler was unchallenged for third. He was well clear of the long shots, Blue Dart and Little Johnny.
