More than 8000 Cook Islanders, Niueans and Tokelau Islanders now live in New Zealand, says the annual report of the Department of Island Territories, tabled in Parliament today. About 850 islanders from New Zealand’s territories settle in New Zealand each year. The majority settle in the Auckland area. The report said apart from small communities in Wellington and Hamilton, Niueans settled mainly in Auckland, 50 per cent of Cook Islanders remained in Auckland and most of the balance lived in Wellington and Tokoroa. Smaller Cook Islands communities lived in Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua, and the South Island “The health and general conduct of the islanders is good and the majority find little difficulty in adapting themselves to their new environment,” the report says. “They have a reputation for being good workers and no employment problems are apparent.”
