DRINKING MINORS
Impatience With Law
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 13. Impatient with existing legislation the Hotel Association and Hotel Workers’ Union are considering an approach to the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) to have penalties on minors found drinking on licensed premises substantially increased. A national conference between the two groups will be held soon to determine policy. The Auckland union has recently held stop-work meetings after cases of assaults on barmen who refused drinks to visiting seamen because they thought they were under 21. Minors found drinking on licensed premises can be fined a maximum of £lO. Barmen serving them are liable to a similar fine but after several offences the police may apply to cancel a licensee’s licence.
