De Gaulle Warns Of War Spread
(N.Z.P A. Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, July 13. General de Gaulle last night condemned the Vietnam war as cruel and devastating. He warned that it would either pile on destruction and ruin in Vietnam, or sweep across frontiers in global proportions.
The President was speaking at a dinner in Paris in honour of King Savang Vatthana, of Laos, who has arrived in Paris on a fourday State visit. Referring to France’s readiness to aid Laos’s development, the President said it was recognised that Laos could not re-establish its stability while there was this “cruel and devastating war” on its borders. “France condemns this war,” he said. “At this moment, the Viet-
namese populations of North and South are under the sway of crushing circumstances which each day are going to become more aggravated, and which can only result in destruction, ruin, and hate accumulated in the region, unless the struggle sweeps across other frontiers and takes on a global character.”
