Prams On Buses
Sir, —I was amazed to read that the Christchurch Tramway Workers’ Union is to discuss the carrying of prams on Transport Board buses. To me, coming from Wellington, where prams are carried free on buses at any hour of the day, it was surprising enough to learn that there is a charge for the carriage of prams here, as well as a time limit. But the fact that bus drivers are thinking of banning prams altogether is really incredible. Have the bus drivers considered the cost that would be involved for a mother without a car, living some dis-, tance from the city, if she had to take her baby to a city day nursery by taxi every morning, and bring him home by taxi every evening? Even for non-working mothers, there must inevitably be times when they have to take their babies into town. Traffic congestion is far worse in Wellington, where the city streets are very narrow.—Yours, etc., YOUNG MOTHER. July 13, 1966.
