Executive Voting Change Not Favoured
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND. The constitution of the Troting Conference was debated at the annual meeting in Auckland yesterday when a Wellington Trotting Club recommendation was defeated. The recommendation read: “For the purpose of electing members to the executive the conference should be divided into two districts in the North Island and three in the South Island, and the totalisator clubs in each of these areas should nominate and elect to the executive members from these respective areas.” The mover, Mr D. I. Macdonald, said it was essential that electors and voters should vote only for men they knew well. It was folly for an Auckland man for instance, to vote for a southern man about whom he knew little or nothing. Mr W. J. Murray (Marlborough) and Mr R. Thompson (Waikato) suggested that New Zealand be divided into six South Island and four North Island districts. “This,” said Mr Murray, “would give the clubs in particular areas direct representation on the conference.” Mr R. J. Rolfe (North Island
vice-president) said the status of trotting depended on administering it on a national basis.
“It’s impossible to serve two masters," he added. “Our system is the envy of many sporting bodies.” Mr O. Hutchinson (South Island vice-president) spoke against the recommendation, as did the immediate past president (Mr W. H. Roche) and Mr W. A. Craddock (Westport). Mr Macdonald replied that there was no threat to the present balance of power.
