ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Wethers Dearer; One Sale At £5 4s
Fat wether values showed some improvement on last week at the Addington stock market yesterday, both woolly and shorn sheep meeting a freer sale.
Woolly wethers, which were not yarded in very large numbers, frequently sold at more than £4 a head, and there was one sale at £5 4s.
Apart from prime light-weights, fat lamb values were easier. Little interest was shown at the opening of the store sheep sale, but values for breeding ewes closed firm on last week. In an erratic sale, fat cattle values appreciated again. Store cattle continued to sell very well, and in the dairy section, a cow topped the market at £73 10s. Store Sheep A fairly large gallery followed the store sheep sale, but most were spectators. Values for ewes opened markedly easier on last sale, but closed on a par with last week’s rates. The store lamb entry, which was very plain, totalled 615 compared with 504 last week, while the adult sheep yarding declined from 1946 last sale to 1497. , Only three pens of ewe lambs were offered, three of them being Romneys in the wool. I These sold from 77s 6d to 81s 6d while a pen of small halfbreds, also in the wool, sold at 51s 6d. Ten pens of wether lambs were offered, and they were a very ordinary selection. A pen of Border-Romneys topped the section at 695, while the same price was paid for a small lot of Romneys. Shorn halfbreds sold at 50s and 51s. while halfbreds in the wool sold to 55s 6d. The adult ewe yarding was a mixed offering, and included several pens of small, lightframed halfbreds, which did not meet a strong sale. However, ewes showing some DreedIng, and with good mouths, sold steadily, top price being 81s 6d for 129 well-woolled, big framed Romneys. Mixed aged halfbreds sold from 65s to 735. and Corriedales to' 72s 6d. Other one-year and soundmouthed ewes sold from 58s to 625, with small light-condi-tioned ewes from 48s to 565. Three pens of two-tooth ewes were offered, two of them being halfbreds. These sold at 78s and 79s respectively, while a pen of attractive Border-Cor-riedales was passed at £5 9s. Sales of store sheep Included: Ewes: J. Miller (Rangitata). 191 mixed aged halfbreds at 71s to 735: P J. Kiddell (Horrelville). 92 Corrfedales at 655: J B. Morrow (Montalto), 178 late shorn Romneys at 60s 6d. Fat Lambs Quality In the fat lamb yarding was not up to that of previous weeks, and values were generally a little easier. The entry showed a decline from 2283 last sale’ to 1995. At its best stages, the market was firm on last week, but It was generally easier by Is to 2s. Recentlyshorn sheep appeared to firm 2s or so a head, sales of thlss class of wether ranging consistently at 74s Id to 77s Id. Woolly
wethers showed a similar Improvement. Ewes again met a steady sale, but the market did not have quite the strength of last week. Values were easier by about 2s a head, but it was still a very satisfactory sale.
