PROTECTION OF SEALS
Lifting Of 'Ban Asked flv.a. Pr««« MELBOURNE, July 10. The Australian Primary Producers’ Union has asked the Victorian Government to lift protective legislation on seals around the Victorian coast so that they can be killed and marketed. A delegate to the union’s annual meeting in Melbourne, Mr T. S. Wynne, claimed that 5000 seals on Seal Rocks, off Phillip Island south-east of Melbourne, were costing the fishing industry 1 million dollars annually by eating 4000 tons of fish a year. A petition signed by 720 professional and amateur fishermen seeking to have the existing seal protection legislation lifted has been handed to Victorian Chief Secretary, Mr Arthur Ryiah.
