Rise In Burglaries Halts In June
The steep rise in burglaries in Christchurch from February levelled last month. The 145 burglaries reported in June was the same as the number reported in May.
The value of property taken by burglars dropped from £7OOO in May to £4OOO last month. At least 15 persons were arrested last month on charges of burglary—charges including 40 of the offences reported during the month. More persons will be brought before the Court on summons and others will appear in the Children’s Court The number of thefts reported last month was 239, compared with 213 in May. The value of property stolen was £6lOO compared with £5OOO in May. Twenty-three persons were arrested on charges of theft The number of cases of frauds reported showed a sharp drop from 31 in May to 13 last month the lowest number for this type of offence reported m Lnnstcnurcn for two years. Unlawful takings of veh. icles dropped from 34 in May
to 29 last month, and sex offences reported numbered 13 last month, one less than in May. Thefts from vehicles were 58 last month, the value of the property stolen being £l6OO. This compared with 62 similar thefts in May, worth £l3OO. There were 103 business premises burgled last month and 42 houses. But many of the 31 thefts from private dwellings were from unsecured houses.
