Govt Short Of Architects
The architectural division of the Ministry of Works was unable to complete the 1965-6 programme without drawing even more heavily than in the past on the services of private architects, engineers and quantity surveyors. This is stated in the division’s report in the annual Ministry of Works statement presented to the House of Representatives. The report says also that at March 31 last 58 jobs of a total value of £8,058,672 were in the hands of private architects, apart from those working on Government or semiGovernment projects not directly controlled by the architectural division. The situation was more serious in the field of quantity surveying because the departmental staff was insufficient to deal with all the jobs which had been designed by the division’s architects. The result was that 23 jobs in this category, of a total value of £2,713,200, had had to be done by private firms.
