Cuts Explained

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, July 11

The Horowhenua Electric Power Board today answered criticism that flood clearance in the Makerua Drainage Board’s area has been put 55,000,000 gallons behind because of power cuts. The power board’s engineer (Mr IL J. Hartley) said that- it was correct that flood control pumps had been switched off at times of peak load. “Power for the pumps has been arranged on a peak load reduction tariff, the same as water heaters,” he said.

“The supply is controlled by the familiar rhythm system. “The cuts have not been for long periods, but I understand that in some cases the ‘switch back on signals’ did not register at the pump sites and drainage board men had therefore to go the rounds and reconnect them manually. This would be the explanation for the complaint,” Mr Hartley said. Mr Hartley said the board would do better to obtain its power for the pumps at a full rate. Supply would then not be broken, he said.
