Winners All The Way McLaren
Bruce McLaren of New Zealand scored a decisive victory on Sunday in a 219-mile sports car race at Le Circuit Mont Trembiant, 80 miles North of Montreal, the Press Association reported. It was McLaren’s second victory of the season in two starts in Canada. He was driving a McLaren-Chevrolet.
McLaren has also won a major event at Mosport, near Toronto, and the Le Man’s 24-hour endurance race in France this year. Runner-up in the Sunday event was L. Notschonbacker, a German, driving a car purchased from McLaren. B. Morely (United States) was third, also driving a McLarendesigned and manufactured car.
An expected duel between McClaren and J. Grant, the Indianapolis 500 driver, did not occur as Grant was forced to pull out of the race with engine trouble on the 36th lap of the 75-lap event. McLaren will race in the Formula 1 British Grand Prix next Saturday.
BRIGGS
Britain’s reigning speedway champion, New Zealander Barry Briggs, was riding so well that he could beat most of his opposition on a onewheeled bike with a puncture, the “Sunday Mirror” said. Briggs will ride in the British European final of the
world championship at Sheffield on Thursday. He will defend his “Sunday Mirror" British match race title against Oxford’s Arne Pander on Friday night. Next week he will ride for Great Britain in Poland.
Briggs referred to his number one bike as his “superbike,” the newspaper said. “I train like a lunatic,” he said, “but I can’t get below 12sL So I’ve had to slim the bike down instead.” The meet at Sheffield will decide the eight men to represent Britain at the European final at Wembley in September. It was brilliant riding by Briggs which led the West of England team to a 59-49 victory over the Soviet Union at
Swindon on Saturday, the “Mirror” said. Briggs, who rides for Swindon, was masterful throughout on his home circuit and finished with a maximum of 18 points.
...BUT NOT BRABHAM
New Zealand’s Denis Hulme won the formula II Grand Prix of France on Sunday after J. Brabham was forced out with a broken gearshift lever near the finish when leading. Hulme, driving a BrabhamHonda, had his first formula II win of the season. It was the seventh successive victory for Brabham-Honda cars in formula II events. A. Rees, in a BrabhamCosworth, was second, P. Rodriguez was third in a LotusCosworth, and J. Ahrens was fourth in a Brabham-Cos-worth. The 46-lap race was a runway for the Brabhams, powered by Honda engines. Brabham took the lead on the first lap and stretched it to about 12 seconds until Hulme, who had a bad start, worked through the field and moved into second place. It seemed to be another Brabham-Honda sweep of the two top places until five laps from the finish when Brabham slowed to a halt.
Brabham had already won six firsts in the car and Hulme had been placed second to Brabham five times.
