Stars Beaten By One Point In Women’s Games
Ranglora moved off the I bottom of the points table when It narrowly beat Stars, 20-20, In the women’s Indoor basketball A grade com petion last evening. However, this win was not totally unexpected. The leading teams. Checkers, Rex and YGlrls, all recorded substantial tons. Results were:— Ranglora 21, Stars 20. Y-Glrls 37, Teachers College 12. Rex 24. Rebels 13. Checkers 53, University A 12. Ranglora v. Stars In the most even game of the evening Ranglora snatched a one point lead over Stars in the last minute of play to win. Both teams were evenly matched and this resulted in close guarding and frequent mishandling. Accurate shots by J. Hansen, who was well supported throughout by L. Dobson and D. Smith, gave Stars an early lead but J, Taylor and C. Rurbern turned the tide in favour of Rangiara with some One interceptions at total moments. Top scorers were Hansen (Stars) 8 and J. Taylor (Rangtora) 8. Y-Girls V. Teachers College The fine team combination of Y-Girls was far stronger than the less experienced College side and after a preliminary settling down period was well in control of play. Plenty of defensive rebounds and interceptions by guards, N. Morrow and M. Newman kept
the forward line constantly on attack and with M. Coulson. R. Leask, and J. Partridge passing and shooting with ease, the score meunted rapidly In their favour. Top scorers: M. Coulson 10, J. Partridge 10. Rex A v. Rebels A After a low scoring first half with neither team looking particularly effective, Rex settled down to completely play Rebels out of the same. The zone defence maintained by Rebels proved completely Inadequate and had Rex been In good shooting form the score would have been considerably higher. Only a last minute spurt by Rebels gave their score any respectability. Top scorer: J. Taylor (Rex) 10. Checkers v. Varsity A Although winning by an extremely large margin. Checkers Blay was frequently mediocre. nfversity was without too players, J. Goulden and G. McGregor, and this seriously hampered Its play. Their unwillingness to attempt any shots at goal gave Checkers plenty of opportunities to pick up Interceptions and loose passes. J. Baker and S. Chamberlain made the most of the manv chances offered to score goals to top score with 14 and 18 points respectively. Other results were:—Rebels B 5, Rex C 5: University B 2.
