SPANISH CHRIST

A twelfth-century Gothic statue “Christ in Majesty” has been purchased by the Auckland Art Gallery for £2OOO. The statue is a 52in high Spanish wood carving. It is coloured and a lot of its original colour still remains. Formerly the property of a Spanish convent, it has been purchased from a Sydney gallery director and is expected to arrive in September. The Arts Council has granted £BOO towards the purchase cost. The director of the Auckland Art Gallery, Mr G. Docking, said the statue was an exceedingly fine and beautiful example from an era in which art galleries were finding it very difficult to secure works of quality. He said it was a major work which showed the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style. It would probably be the oldest piece of sculpture in New Zealand.
