Canterbury Wins Table Tennis
Canterbury beat Hutt Valley, for the ninth time in 11 years, when it won the annual table tennis match between the two associations, by 19-9.
Hutt Valley , won only four of the 16 singles matches. Although it did better in the doubles, it never looked like catching up again.
21-17; beat Shewan, 21-16, 21-11 C. W. C. Tilby beat R. H. Giles, 18-21, 22-20, 21-18: lost to H. M Ridley. 21-17, 18-21, 10-21. K Ward lost to Ridley, 11-21, 20-22; beat Giles, 21-9, 21-9.
Women.—Mrs T. May beat Miss J. Bush, 21-17, 21-18; beat Mrs V. Muirhead, 21-13, 21-16. Mrs M. J. Shadbolt beat Mrs Muirhead, 21-8, 21-10; beat Miss Bush, 21-18, 21-10. Miss M. Ward-Holmes beat Miss D. Golloway. 21-18, 21-18; beat Miss K. Borlase, 21-17, 18-21, 21-19. Miss M. Green lost to Miss Borlase, 13-21, 18-21; lost to Miss Galloway, 10-21, 11-21. DOUBLES Men.—Armstrong and Brightwell beat Shewan and Giles, 21-16, 21-5: lost to Murphy and Ridley. 13-21, 21-12, 18-21. Tilby and Ward lost to Murphy and Ridley. 21-13, 17-21, 18-21; beat Shewan and Giles, 21-15, 20-22, 21-5. Women.—Mrs May and Mrs Shadbolt beat Miss Bush and Miss Borlase, 21-18, 21-14; beat Mrs Muirhead and Miss Galloway, 21-17, 21-15. Miss WardHolmes and Miss Green beat Mrs Muirhead and Miss Galloway, 21-18, 21-16; lost to Miss Bush and Miss Borlase, 17-21, 21-16, 17-21.
Five Canterbury players, J. Armstrong, V. N. Brightwell, Mrs T. May, Mrs M. J. Shadbolt and Miss M. WardHolmes, won both singles matches. Only H. M. Ridley did similarly for Hutt Valley. Valley.
Armstrong and Brightwell both played well, although Armstrong dropped a game to G. B Murphy, but they were not a convincing doubles combination. Brightwell s back-hand attack was consistent and dominated the table.
Mrs May and Mrs Shadbolt were too powerful in the women’s matches and won every game they played. The best match of a contest which provided few excitements, was between Murphy and Kidley against C. W. C. Tilby and K. Ward. The Hutt Valley pair won but not until some close moments and good rallies. In the following results, Canterbury names come first. Results were: SINGLES Men.—J. Armstrong beat C. P. Shewan, 21-12, 21-11; beat G. B. Murphy, 22-20, 21-23, 21-15. V. N. Brightwell beat Murphy, 21-18,
Mixed.—Armstrong and Mrs May beat Murphy and Mrs Muirhead. 21-17, 21-19; Tilby and Mrs Shadbolt beat Ridley and Miss Bush, 21-18, 21-12; Brightwell and Miss Green lost to Giles and Miss Borlase, 15-21, 21-17, 8-21; Ward and Miss WardHolmes lost to Shewan and Miss Galloway, 21-19, 13-21, 16-21.
