GOOD PLAY IN SENIOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior games in the Canterbury Basketball Association’s eleventh competition round on Saturday were interesting because, although there were no surprising results, the three defeated teams played some of their best games this season.
New Brighton beat Teachers’ College, which played a fine game, and Sacred Heart had some difficult moments in its game with West B—bottom in the competition. Technical beat St. Nicholas, which also played well. West A had a bye. Results:—
New Brighton gained impetus from its easily established early lead, and played strongly to lead 21-10 at half-time. In the second spell. New Brighton almost doubled its score, whereas Teachers’ College was able to gain only six goals. Shooting in both teams was at fault, but New Brighton, with strong defence play, was able to get the ball to its goal end frequently. The Teachers' College defences were somewhat ineffectual against New Brighton goal players. New Brighton pulled ahead strongly, moving from 31-12 to 33-13, then to the Anal score of 41-16. Sacred Heart v. Wast B This was another game in which one team was far stronger than the other. Sacred Heart is among the leaders of the competition, whereas West B has yet to win a game. However, the game was not uninteresting. West started off determined to keep its Inevitable defeat from being entirely ignominious, and it did this with some success. Its play was controlled and highly organised. It started strongly and enthusiastically, but when Sacred Heart managed
to establish a 7-3 lead West seemed to lose confidence. Sacred Heart’s goal play was a little off form at the beginning, but the defences kept the ball coming back to goal and the shooters had plenty of opportunities. J. Harnett was doing a major part of the work for Sacred Heart, and her West counterpart had little chance of keeping up with her. By half-time the score was 17-11.
New Brighton 41, Teachers* College 16. Sacred Heart 30, West B 25.
Then West picked up again and was showing some fine play. Its game was fast and well coordinated. However, technical faults lost it a lot of balls. As the game progressed, West extended itself fully, and kept up with Sacred Heart, bringing the score to 28-23.
Technical 43, St. Nicholas 28.
Points: —Technical 21, West A 12, New Brighton 14, Sacred Heart 12, St. Nicholas 8, Teachers’ College 2, West B 0.
Sacred Heart pulled away to win 30-25.
Technical v. St. Nicholas Technical had another win to strengthen its position at the top of the senior competition. St. Nicholas was a weaker team but played to its full extent. Technical took the lead from the beginning, with the score rising from 10-6 to 14-18. St. Nicholas played determinedly but was not strong enough to provide adequate opposition. Its attacking play was especially weak. By half-time the score was 21-17.
N. Brighton v. Teachers’ Coll. New Brighton was obviously the far stronger team, and yet the game retained Interest. Teachers’ College in its usual enthusiastic way played a spirited game.
Technical then took over, and left St. Nicholas unable to keep up with its determined play. The final score was 43-28.
